Why did Iceland call for the feminisation of its banking culture after the 2008 financial crisis, and prosecute those who put self-interest above social responsibility? Is it really the benevolent society the press makes it out to be? Inspired by Icelanders’ independence of mind and reported sense of social justice, the author spent three years photographing and speaking with people across Icelandic society, from musicians and scientists to educators and politicians. The result, 165 portraits and 20,000 words, reveals what is possible for all of us.

Elūl is a reckoning with a past relationship between two women, photographed across years of intimacy and returned to long after it ended. The work asks what many of us avoid asking: how closeness can coexist with absence, why attraction draws us toward what we have not yet healed, and what we begin to see in ourselves once we stop idealising the other. Its title takes its name from the Hebrew month of reflection and return. A meditation on projection, memory, and the inner work of self-repair.
